WMST 270 - Feminist & LGBTQ+ Art: Re-Imagining the Kress Collection

The supplementary labels that you see in this room are created by the students of the Bucknell course, Feminist and LGBTQ+ Art in the department of Women’s and Gender Studies. A key goal of this course is to examine how specific identity-based art movements like Feminist and LGBT+ art comment on, subvert, or challenge traditional art canons. Students worked individually and in groups to create radical readings of the works in the Kress Collection based on feminist, queer, and post-colonial theories. While some students framed the original subjects and narratives innovatively, others offered new interpretations of the work using imaginative storytelling. We hope this experimental project offers a creative jumping-off point to empower the audience to look at familiar work in fresh, critical ways. - Dr. Rachel Trusty
